PLAYBOOK90: The Full Season

90 Plays.
4 Quarters.
1 Real Business.

Every play is a daily action. Not a lesson. Not a framework. An action. Plays run in order, always. Each quarter builds the foundation for the next. First sale by halftime. Real business by Play 90.

You've been studying the books. Now it's time to run The Playbook.

Coach B.
Your Coach
I built this because
nobody else did.

I started my career in business as a salesman in the 80s. Over the following decades I sold everything you can think of. Until the last thing I sold was my business. During that time I began coaching football as well. And I noticed that in order to win in the game of business or the game of football, you need the right playbook.

After getting known for being a business coach and a football coach who can motivate people to win, some suits came and asked me to write down the simplest playbook to start a business. I handed them a piece of paper that said Rule 1: Work hard. They asked if I could flesh it out more. Second draft said Rule 2: Don't quit.

We iterated like that 88 more times until I had 90 plays. And three of their guys quit. Guess they forgot about Rule 2.

If you've been sitting on an idea and can't figure out where to start, I built this for you. It's time to take action and be the quarterback of your business, and your life.

The Playbook

Four Quarters.
One Direction.

Each quarter has a clear outcome. You don't move to the next quarter until the current one is complete. The season doesn't end at Play 90. It ends when you have a real business.

Quarter 1
Validate
Plays 1–22

Before you spend a dollar on equipment, tools, or marketing, you prove the idea is real. Q1 puts you in front of three real people who would pay for your service. You collect their exact language, understand their pain, and build your offer around what they actually told you, not what you assumed.

  • Talk to three real potential customers before building anything
  • Validate demand with zero money spent
  • Build cost model and set your price based on real data
  • Write your first offer in the customer's own language
  • Know exactly who your first customer is
Outcome: Validated offer with real market feedback ✓
Q1
Quarter 2
Launch
Plays 23–45

Q2 is where the business becomes real. You build the minimum infrastructure needed to take money (payment system, rate card, website, outreach channel) and then you start running plays to find your first customer. Q2 ends at halftime when you close the first sale.

  • Set up payment system and rate card
  • Build the outreach system and contact list
  • Send first warm and cold outreach messages
  • Handle objections, follow up, and close
  • Play 45: The Halftime Review, first sale confirmed
Outcome: First profitable sale closed ✓
Q2
Quarter 3
Optimize
Plays 46–67

The first sale proved the idea. Q3 builds the machine. You audit what worked, fix the margin, document the delivery process, ask for referrals, and close the second sale. By the end of Q3 you have a repeatable system, not just a job you did once.

  • Audit the first sale and fix margin gaps
  • Document the delivery process so it's repeatable
  • Build client onboarding and follow-up sequences
  • Close the second sale and identify the pattern
  • Build scheduling system and optimize the offer
Outcome: Second sale closed, systems documented ✓
Q3
Quarter 4
Grow
Plays 68–90

Q4 turns a working business into a real one. You build the referral system, set revenue targets, identify and remove bottlenecks, raise the price, and document the full business system. Play 90, Score the Touchdown, is the season closer. By this point you have a business, not a side hustle.

  • Build and activate the referral system
  • Set and hit first revenue target
  • Identify and remove the bottleneck
  • Raise the price based on real market data
  • Play 90: Score the Touchdown, season complete
Outcome: Real business. Play 90 is the Touchdown ✓

What a Play Looks Like

Every Play Has
One Job.

Each play is a single daily action. Not a lesson to read. Not a framework to understand. An action to complete. Every play has the same structure: seven sections, one outcome.

1
The Huddle
Coach B.'s 60-second brief before you run the play. Context and motivation.
2
The Play
One sentence. Exactly what you're doing today.
3
The Why
Why this play matters at this point in the season.
4
The Action
Step-by-step. Do this, then this, then this. No ambiguity.
5
Completion Check
The play isn't done until these items are checked. No skipping.
6
The Reflection
One question. What did you learn running this play?
7
The Extended Play
Go deeper. The book that backs this play, if you want more.

Q1: Validate
Prove the Market Exists
Peter Thiel asked a question most founders never ask: is there actually a market here? The market you are entering already exists. People are already paying for what you are building. Your job today is to find them and understand what they charge. That is how you know the market is real, not because you believe in your idea, but because other people are already making money from it.
Find three businesses or people already solving the same problem and getting paid for it.
A market that exists is a market that pays. Three competitors means three data points on what customers already accept, what they pay, and what they are still not getting. This play gives you the pricing intelligence you will use at Play 12 and Play 19.
Find one large or national operation, one local established business, and one solo operator. Write down each one's name, what they offer, and what they charge. Then write: What I learned that I wasn't looking for.
☑ Three real competitors documented: name, offer, price
☑ One from each level: national, local, solo
☑ Unexpected learnings section written
Which of the three competitors would your target customer most likely hire today if they had not found you? Write down what that competitor does well and where they fall short.
Pay close attention to the difference between hourly pricing and outcome-based pricing in your research. A cleaner who charges $25/hr and a cleaner who charges $150/house are selling the same service with completely different economics. Know which model you are choosing and why. — Zero to One, Peter Thiel (2014)
